The finalists for this category have each proven their ability to useful and impactful incredible tools and products, but ColoradoBiz selected a winner with the hunch that they’ve only just scratched the surface of their successes.

MYCOTECHNOLOGY

The global sugar industry is about to experience some serious competition from an unsuspecting toadstool. Inside a lab in Aurora, scientists are poised to disrupt how sugar is used in packaged goods. By deploying invisible fungi molecules to sit on a person’s taste buds, the company has found a natural way to block bitter flavor. In 2015, the company developed its first product – coffee – and engineered a dark chocolate bar that had 66 percent of its sugar substituted for the fungus. Though MycoTechnology may not yet be a household name, the founders have forged deals with some of the largest food companies in the world.

GAMMA 2 ROBOTICS

Like something out of a sci-fi flick, this Denver-based company announced the launch of its fully autonomous security robot in 2013 after five years of development. This revolution in commercial security, the “Cybernetic Brain,” enables robots to operate independently, without manual supervision or remote controls. The robot can detect and immediately report on invaders, fire, smoke, water and explosive vapor as well as suspicious objects and events.

This Vail Valley-based brewer aims to ramp up its production to 90,000 barrels by 2020. With canning efforts in Edwards and bottling in Denver, the company owned by the husband-wife team of Kevin and Marisa Selvy has a strong Colorado foothold. Offering weekly releases of the “local’s stash” reserve series, Crazy Mountain brews are available in more than 20 states and nine countries.
