ZAYO GROUP

In 10 years, Zayo has grown from a small Boulder startup to an industry infrastructure leader. “The most important factor in Zayo’s success was having the right idea and an incredibly talented team to make it happen,” Chairman and CEO Dan Caruso says. “About a decade ago, the volume of digital data was beginning its exponential growth, requiring fiber-based networks and infrastructure. At the same time, there were a number of geographically orphaned network operators that we were able to acquire at attractive prices.”

After 41 acquisitions, including the recent Allstream and Electric Lightwave Inc., Zayo has infrastructure assets that include 122,000 route miles of fiber network and 45-plus data centers. The company provides resilient, high-capacity, low-latency communications for customers that range from wireless carriers and content providers to financial institutions, health care and government.

This year, the company launched the 3.0 version of Tranzact, a proprietary online platform that enables customers to view, shop and manage complex infrastructure services. The update incorporated some concepts from online consumer retail, with the goal of making shopping and managing complex infrastructure in a B2B environment as easy as shopping for travel.

Today, Zayo has 3,900 employees and works to maintain its entrepreneurial culture. Recruiting focuses on talent that is curious, motivated and resilient. The company pushes staff to take on big challenges by encouraging people to move into stretch assignments that may be outside their traditional field of expertise.

To cultivate young talent, Zayo works with the Colorado STEM Initiative and the Denver School of Science and Technology, Women’s Foundation of Colorado and the STEM Coalition to support students, especially girls, who have an interest in science and technology.
