Denver Startup Week can safely call itself the "largest free entrepreneurial event" of its kind, thanks to a record-breaking 18,500 registrants for the 350 programs. This represents a 31 percent increase from the previous record of 13,334 registered attendees set in 2016.

The sixth annual event runs from Monday, September 25 through Friday, September 29.

We're turning a "cruise ship into a battle ship," said Erik Mistiek, chief innovation officer for the state of Colorado, president at IMAgine Analytics and co-founder of Denver Startup Week. Mitisek added that the 18,000-plus registrants are more than half that who attend the annual SXSW Interactive event in Austin, Tex.

According to the Downtown Denver Startup Report released Monday, 713 center city tech startups, including 170 founded in the past year are participating in the week-long series of events. Those companies employ 4,875 people. These companies have collectively received $515 in venture capital funding. The programing is supported by more than 1,000 community members, session presenters and volunteers.

The hashtag #DENStartupWeek has achieved trending status with more than 60 million impressions.

Wednesday's Startup Week Job Fair and Showcase features 100 companies hiring, while the Denver Startup Week Pitch Challenge, sponsored by Project-X-ITE, The Cable Center and WeWork, will give finalists the opportunity to share their entrepreneurial endeavors live. The winner of the pitch competition will receive $104,000 in cash and prizes.

Nearly 5,500 people visited Basecamp, launched by Chase for Business during the first two days of the week.
