The bad news is that business is still down for construction companies nationwide.

The good news is that despite a 10 percent loss of business, PCL Construction moved up from the eighth to the sixth largest construction company in North America in 2010, according to Engineering News Record.

“There’s still a real downturn in commercial construction, especially in hotel
and retail,” says Michael Kehoe, vice president of finance for the company. “But the good news is that civil infrastructure is now going up.”

And that’s especially good news for the 1,200 salaried employees in the United States, as well as the 2,400 employees in Canada, where the company is based – and where it was founded more than 100 years ago.

A bad economy has not stopped PCL Construction’s basic mission.
“We use the phrase ‘employee-owned, community-minded,'” says Kehoe, who has been with PCL for 11 years.

“Because our employees own the company, there’s a greater tie between employee and company. When it’s time to manage overhead, we’ve been very careful about letting
people go. If we can move them around to find other opportunities, we do so.”

There’s also a big tie between the employees and the community, Kehoe says.

Last year, around $1.6 milliion was donated to the Mile High campaign fund.
The company matches donations by employees dollar for dollar.
“We earned a Champion of Hope emeritus award from United Way in 2002,” Kehoe says. “Our president of U.S. operations, Peter Beaupré, is chairman of the board of trustees of Mile High United Way.”

And with their unique skills in the construction business, it seems fitting that many of the company’s employees donate time and funds to Habitat
for Humanity.

“We just handed Habitat a check
for $1 million yesterday,” Kehoe says. “We have a lot of very loyal, very
kind people working for us. They’re making good things happen.”
