Denver’s mouth that roars
Denversportsradio.com brings irreverent banter online
By Bart TaylorFor listeners, Internet radio programming is the new “Wild West” of Internet media development. With little regulation, very little startup costs, and an infinite number of programming ideas, it’s conceivable the Web is poised to change the radio business as fundamentally as it has print media.
Esoteric topics aside, sports is a mainstay of talk radio, and fans of Colorado sports talk fans can tune in to a new local Internet radio program pushing the boundaries of conventional talk radio programming – with crystal clear reception online.
Denversportsradio.com, launched by long-time radio jock Dino Costa and partner David Kaiser, president of Pinnacor Financial Group Inc., is providing listeners a new and wild online radio ride. If you haven’t tuned in, you’re missing out on Denver’s most controversial and outspoken sports radio personality. ColoradoBiz is a media partner with the new venture.
The Dino Costa Show, streamed from 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays, takes no prisoners.
On Monday, Costa wasted little time pouncing on Brandon Marshall, the Broncos wide receiver who’s had difficulty staying out of legal trouble – and away, apparently, from his long-time girlfriend.
Costa ranted, “If you’ve got a Brandon Marshall jersey on your back … shame in you. I want Brandon Marshall out of town. The city of Denver would be much better for it.”
Speaking of Marshall’s unflattering appearance Sunday on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” Costa added, “These guys (pro sports athletes) can’t put a sentence together … if most players in the NBA including 75 percent of the Nuggets roster weren’t tall, and could put a ball in the basket, they’d be shining my shoes at DIA, or carrying my bags on the next train out of Union Station.”
All this on top of rooting Jay Cutler’s exit: “The Broncos are a better football team, and Denver’s a better city with No. 6 out of town.”
Costa took little solace in the Denver Nuggets finals appearance in the NBA conference finals.
“The Nuggets need a new coach … the fat man’s gotta go … and (Chauncey) Billups and (Carmelo Anthony) Melo were ‘awful’ in the conference finals,” though he makes it clear he’s a fan of both players.
You get the picture.
Costa and Kaiser have assembled a fairly impressive lineup of programming during the day and into the evening. Denver Post sports writer Mark Kiszla partners with Chad Andrus, lately of Denver’s long-standing “The Fan” sports-talk radio franchise, on “Kickin it with Kiz” weekday mornings, streamed from 9-10 a.m.
For his part, Kaiser is reprising the “Business for Breakfast” concept that has aired in Denver as a table-setter for Costa’s sports lineup, with “Financial Dollars & Sense,” airing from 7 to 9 a.m. Kaiser and partner Woody Vincent “explore market cycles … and stay current with the latest on Wall Street,” and represent a credible if tame alternative to Costa’s commentary.
All in all, denversportsradio.com is a worthwhile, provocative addition to Colorado’s talk-radio lineup.

“Dino Costa is a true American Original. In a world all too often filled with “radio talking heads” spitting out the corporate pabulum, not adding anything to the sports industry, Dino Costa tells it as it is. He’s honest, he’s open, he’s unique, he’s one of a kind, he listens, and he has his own opinions but he’s always ready to listen to what others have to say. What’s best about Dino Costa not only is he an American Original but in an industry where so many sports radio post offer generic, bland and uninformative radio each and every day – Dino Costa tells it as it is, isn’t in anyone’s back pocket. In a world filled with bland – Dino Costa is the real thing, the future of all-sports radio is in people like Dino Costa and their ability to tell the truth in an informative, entertaining, enlightening and education manner. Dino Costa delivers!!!” February 10, 2008

“Dino was arrogant, brash, cocky, and hard to control. He was also knowledgable, confident, competent, and fun to listen to. In short an excellent talk host. It's been over 5 years since he was in our market, but is still referenced on the street and by listeners. A small tornado that blew through our town.”

“I was Dino's first television producer when 'Raw Sports with Dino Costa' hit the air on FSN Rocky Mountain in January of '06. His transition from an outspoken sports radio shock-jock to a legitimate on camera TV presence was as quick and smooth as any I had ever seen, or seen since. We produced over 100 episodes together, introducing the Rocky Mountain audience to a distinctive, passionate brand of sports talk never seen before, anywhere. Dino's willingness to approach topics that push the envelope (sports, politics, life, etc.) along with his unique ability to rant on command make it difficult for viewers and/or listeners to turn him off.”

As for this DSR, what a gigantic tub of shit this thing has turned out to be. You talk about a complete goat fuck of an online sports station. The talent SUCKS beyond anything anyone can imagine. If any of those idiots were turned loose on the street (and maybe that will be the case soon with the company making no money at all) I mean does anyone think any of those 'talents' are getting a job anywhere and anytime soon? For Mark Kiszla this is a part time gig that goes along with a full time job at the Post. For everyone else there, they're making peanuts to begin with, and when the DSR boat flips upside down, it will be a host of people form DSR hitting the unemployment office, either that or there going to be working the french fries section at Wendy's! How many of the remaining 'talent's at DSR have ever worked at a radio station before in their lives in any real kind of a situation where they were known people with regular air shifts and a resume that would make any future employer take them even halfway seriously? This 'station' (Online radio? Yeah that'll really work with those misfits working there) is a boondoggle getting worse and worse with each passing day. They have no listeners, no advertisers, their website looks like shit, their shows sound awful, and their future exists of about another few weeks if that. Man, give it up DSR, you just continue to shoot yourself in the feet day after day after day after day. The party is really over. Someone make sure to hit the lights on the way out the door for the last time. What a disgraceful operation this turned out to be in the end. By Kanye knows best on 2009 09 13
Costa is an original in a world full of vanilla.
I'd pay to listen to Dino Costa, and the word on the street is that starting sometime real soon, that is what I'm going to have to do!

The model is not there as of yet to monetize a full time online station such as the one mentioned in this story, a station I have listened to off an on for several weeks.
Not only is the model weak in terms of accruing revenue through advertisers, but the station itself is a boring and lifeless entity from top to bottom.
The only time I felt it was a worthwhile listen was when the subject of this story was airing, Dino Costa, and now that he's not there anymore, I find it a completely moot point to even casually take a few minutes to listen.
But even with Dino Costa and his attention grabbing personality, this station, or any others like it, have a long-long way to go (years) in order for a successful blueprint for internet radio to emerge and to truly make it. By Ed Miller on 2009 08 06
