Venoco chairman and CEO Tim Marquez, an oilman noted for his education-focused philanthropy, is ColoradoBiz magazine’s 2012 Minority Businessperson of the Year, and Lakewood-based Solera National Bank, noted for its support of small business and minority clients, is the magazine’s Diversity Corporation of the Year.

The winners and finalists were honored July 24 at the 18th Annual ColoradoBiz Diversity in Business Breakfast.

Marquez, who founded the oil and gas company Venoco in 1992, helped launch the Denver Scholarship Foundation in 2006 with an initial seeding of $50 million that he continues to support.

Solera National Bank was formed by 21 partners in 2007 with the aim of tending to underserved clients and small businesses, particularly in the Hispanic community. While doing this, the publicly held bank became profitable by its third year and last year increased earnings 80 percent over the previous year.
