Open House Feb. 7 for Women in Business

Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: DoubleTree Hotel, Westminster, CO

Web Site: http://wbncolorado.com

The Women’s Business Network will hold an Open House for all businesswomen in the north Metro Denver area Feb. 7 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Westminster.
The event, from 5-7 p.m., is designed to encourage businesswomen to connect with other professional women in a non-routine setting. At the Open House, guests will learn about the Women’s Business Network and the ways in which the members support each other on an exclusive basis.
The event is free of charge, and the Women’s Business Network encourages guests to RSVP on the WBN website, wbncolorado.com.  The WBN will offer drinks and appetizers, and all guests are encouraged to invite a colleague from another female-based business. Men who wish to learn more about the WBN on behalf of their female colleagues are welcome to attend.
“We hope to establish this Open House as an annual event, because we believe there is a huge need in the north Metro Denver area for businesswomen to support each other in an organized way,” said newly elected WBN President Dee Jacobson.
The members of the WBN meet weekly to share best practices with each other, learn about each other’s businesses, and provide advice in their areas of expertise. There is no competition within the group; and prospective members from “duplicative” industries are asked to put their names on a waiting list for acceptance into the group.
Some industries currently unrepresented within the WBN include floral, acupuncture, event management, travel and graphic art.

What would it be like to raise a family on another planet? When will shipping companies start including "Earth" in the address field of their packages? Who will hit the first 1000-yard golf drive on Mars? Will the first trillionaire make the bulk of her fortune on Earth or elsewhere in the solar system?

Explore these and other future-shaping questions with Brian Enke, a Senior Space Research Analyst at the Southwest Research Institute. Brian has given several space-related DaVinci talks, and now he returns with the latest exciting news on space settlement.

At least four companies or non-profits have developed feasible (and vastly different) business models for sending people to live on other worlds within the next 10-20 years. We will discuss these entities and their plans for opening up the next frontiers for human development. We will also speculate about what these plans mean for the rest of us - and our children. Economics, politics, environmentalism, psychology, energy, medicine, sociology, technology... all subjects and concerns are on the table..

Riding with Ruby - Getting a Feel for DaVinci Coders

Time: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Location: DaVinci Institute, 511 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, CO 80027

Web Site: http://www.davinciinstitute.com/events/641/riding-with-ruby-saturday-february-16-2013

You already know how to manipulate data in spreadsheets and how to build web pages and graphs.  But doing everything by hand can get tedious and error-prone.  The Ruby programming language can save you time by manipulating data and building web pages and graphs for you.

In this workshop, we'll give you a table of data about last year's well-known pro bicycle race in Colorado and some Ruby source code to create web pages and graphs from that data.  We'll also give you a series of exercises that ask you to change the source code to do something slightly differently.  We'll go through and solve the puzzles together.

You don't have to know the details of Ruby to solve the puzzles, but if you do want to learn more, consider enrolling in DaVinci Coders's Ruby on Rails course.

Please Note:  Notebook computer required.  Mac, Windows, and Linux are okay.  No prior programming experience required.

Building on Memory

Time: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Location: Denver Women's Press Club

Web Site: http://dwpconline.org/

Winner of the 2012 Colorado Book Award for Dances in Two Worlds: A Writer-Artist’s Backstory, Thordis Niela Simonsen has turned highlights from her creative non-fiction book into an hour-long multimedia show entitled Building on Memory.

Throughout her innocent 1950s Lake Erie childhood, Thordis Niela Simonsen never dreamed of writing a book or living abroad or restoring a house by hand. And she was long deterred by her mother’s obstinate will from pursuing the one thing she did dream of: becoming an artist. Eventually, all these became a part of her dream-like reality. Evocative and entertaining, Building on Memory is one woman’s soulful and inspiring journey told through Thordis’ own words, photographs and paintings. A conversation with the audience and book signing will follow.

The performance will be held at the beautiful and historic Denver Women’s Press Club (1325 Logan Street in Denver, 80203) on Sunday, February 24 at 4:00pm.  Tickets are $15 at the door (by cash or check to “astragreece inc.”), or $35 including a signed copy of Dances in Two Worlds.   RSVP appreciated:  303.321.5403 or info@astragreece.com.

The C.G. Jung Society of Colorado will also be presenting Building on Memory, with an introduction by Christine Chao, PhD,  on Friday, March 1 at 7:00pm as part of its Spring lecture series. Details available at jungsocietyofcolorado.org.

For more information on Thordis please visit astragreece.com, thordissimonsen.blogspot.com and/or www.facebook.com/DancesinTwoWorlds.

Employee to Entrepreneur :: Shifting Your Mindset to Control Your Own Destiny

Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Location: DaVinci Institute, 511 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, CO 80027

Web Site: http://www.davinciinstitute.com/events/640/employee-to-entrepreneur-monday-february-25-2013

In the past starting your own business was risky. Most often it involved coming up with lots of money, quitting your job, and putting both you, your family, and everything you own on the line.

However, a new breed of solo entrepreneurs have emerged who leverage the power of the Internet and control a vast empire from their home, office, or wherever they happen to be.

Today the risks have shifted, and your bigger risk is doing nothing - staying in your current job, living paycheck to paycheck, seeing no upside ahead. Consider the following:

  • Is your current job a good fit for you? What is the risk of having your talents continually sidelined as you wait for a better opportunity?
  • Are you being paid what you’re worth? What if you let the market decide what you’re worth instead of your boss?
  • What is the risk of ending up 65 or 70 and having regretted your entire life?
  • Who gets to define success or failure in your life? What would it be worth if every failure could be turned into a success, and you were in charge of your own destiny?

Starting on March 26th the DaVinci Institute will be launching the "Empire of One," a 10-week, full-immersion, course for people wanting to break free of their current job.

An Empire of One Business is a one-person (sometimes married couple) business with far reaching spheres of influence. Since you’re in charge, it can be as big or as small as you wish it to be.

The business you create can be formed around a product, a service, or a combination of both. It can be a for-profit, non-profit, domestic-only, international, have broad appeal, or only be for be for left-handed people in Armenia.

You can keep your current job, or tell your boss to take a flying leap.

An Empire of One business puts you squarely in the captain’s seat of your own starship. We will help you set the stage, chose a starting point, surround yourself with experts, and build your own communities. Most importantly, we plan to make it fun. But in the end, this is a journey that you’re in charge of.

Join us on Feb 25th and we'll fill you in on the bigger vision.

NOTE:  Free beer, wine, and refreshments will be provided.
