Before indulging his entrepreneurial streak, Chris Motley traded commodities for Goldman Sachs. A mentor “really helped to make my decisions that led to my first career,” he says. “It all came down to mentorship for me.”
Motley’s mission with Mentor Spaces is to “scale mentorship for underrepresented communities.” He built the foundation for the company while living in St. Louis, then relocated to Colorado in 2019 and launched the platform in 2020.
Now 15 employees, Mentor Spaces counts SAP, Omnicom Media Group, GM Financial and TIAA among its clients. “We facilitate career conversations between employees and a community of prospective underrepresented candidates who could be a good fit at a company,” says the 40-year-old Motley. “Most mentorship programs are exactly that: They’re programs that don’t scale. The differentiation with us is we built technology to scale mentorship.”
His advice to up-and-coming founders? “Get very good at articulating the opportunity and what the world looks like with your company in it,” Motley says. “That’s how you attract capital, that’s how you attract customers, team members, et cetera.”
