118-Year-Old Company Diversifies Revenue Stream and Grows Steadily

The granddaddy of this year’s Top Company winners, the well-known firm was founded 118 years ago when William Johnson converted his South Broadway blacksmith and wagon-building shop to a moving business.
“We are one of the oldest privately held companies in Denver,” President Don Hindman says. “We have grown steadily by diversifying our revenue stream by starting new businesses using our legacy moving and storage business as a platform for future growth.”
Johnson Storage & Moving, which has 10 offices in seven states, has added 200 employees, six acquisitions and three new businesses since 2012. Revenues have quadrupled in the past six years, Hindman says, and the moving conglomerate operates a $30 million international arm, Johnson Logistics.
The company’s 550 full-time associates manage 400,000 square feet of warehouse space and more than 200 trucks. The business provides relocation solutions for more than 10,000 customers each year. Employees are incentivized to practice “boundarylessness” to go above and beyond in serving customers.
One of the newest ventures is a hospitality furniture business that manages supply chains, warehousing, delivery and assembly of furniture, fixtures and equipment for hotels, restaurants and hospitals.
The company helped raise more than $1 million in the past six years for nonprofits assisting people with disabilities and autism. The firm employs a crew of eight high-functioning autistic adults who maintain facilities in Colorado.
This eco-friendly carpet, flooring and upholstery cleaning company founded by Jonathan Barnett in 2006 has expanded rapidly to include 375 franchise locations across 46 U.S. states and four locations in Canada.
The company includes 17 full-time staff at its headquarters plus 23 part-timers at its busy scheduling call center.
Company leaders point out that 136,000 customer reviews on the Oxi Fresh website show an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. Residential and commercial customers are pleased with the water-saving cleaning system that dries quickly.Oxi Fresh supports the charity water.org, which provides small, affordable loans and expert resources for water and sanitation solutions across the world. Oxi Fresh donates each time a customer schedules online, adding up to $67,000 in company contributions since late 2015.
The six-year-old mobile technology company allows shoppers to earn cash back after purchases of everyday items from groceries to office supplies from some 1,400 retailers.
Company leaders note Ibotta (“I bought a…”) ranks among the top five most used smartphone shopping apps in the U.S. based on minutes of use. By July, the service had generated some 28 million consumer downloads and awarded $371 million to users.
In 2017, the company doubled its office space to 76,000 square feet and added more than 100 employees to reach 381 full-time staff plus 122 part-time care agents who work remotely.
The Ibotta Gives program donates funds and employee time to local organizations, such as Heart & Hand youth center, MaxFund animal adoption center and Florence Crittenton Services for teen mothers.
