Boa's RiNo headquarters: The cool stuff going on inside

No wonder it's considered a top place to work

Experiencing the weaknesses of traditional laces on snowboards and hockey skates, “Boa® Closure System was founded in late 1990's by a Southern California surfer, Gary Hammerslag, who had relocated to Steamboat Springs with his family.

At first, gaining traction in the snow sports arena with brands such as K2, Boa’s® unique reel and lace cable system technology moved into the cycling world, and by 2005, was integrated into golf products. Since, Boa® has attracted partners across categories from sports gear and apparel to safety equipment and medical devices.

In 2012, Glenbrook Consumer Partners bought a majority stake in Boa® and by spring that same year, the products were incorporated by more than 100 companies, in more than 8 million products, and within their original market, expanded to one-third of all the snowboard boots produced globally.

The company has been recognized as a top place to work in the city, state and nation by various sources. On top of a fully supported, collective commitment to healthy lifestyles, employees receive stock options and are 20 percent vested within the first full year on the job; five years in, they become full vested, to encourage employees to think like owners.

Recently, ColoradoBiz spent the afternoon at the TAXI District headquarters with a few members of the Boa® team, exploring the nooks and crannies of the design and engineering floor and newest space – the Fit Lab – where Boa® works with brand partners 18 to 24 months out from the unveiling of a product on experimentation, fit optimization, construction methodology and more.

According to Liz Moore, Boa® will work with Zeppelin Development – the builder of TAXI and other projects scattered throughout Denver – to move into a newer, bigger building in the next 18 or so months. She says the most significant change the company has experienced is growth, though the consistent thread that weaves through the team’s trajectory is the collaborative nature of design and product concepts that drive the business and give partners and users the best possible experience with Boa®
