Colorado Springs-based nonprofit The Independence Center offers expansive services to people with disabilities, including "The Art of Accessibility," a quarterly First Friday arts event. The Colorado Business Committee for the Arts awarded the nonprofit as a 2019 honoree for their inclusive programming. The Independence Center has forged unique relationships with area arts organizations to lift up the voices of the people they serve.

CBCA's business for the arts awards are presented to exemplary organizations that have gone above and beyond to support the arts and creative industries.

Each event offers a different component involving the disabled community, whether it be a fashion show, film screening, or musical or dance performance along with a multi-media visual art exhibit. "'The Art of Accessibility' is a place for artists with disabilities to display their creative vision and share their stories with the rest of the community," Timothy Gore, development director, says. "For us, it was never about just the actual event, it was about changing things in the community and changing accessibility for the arts."
