America's Mattress of Western Colorado honored for its support of the arts

America’s Mattress of Western Colorado was honored by the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts (CBCA) on March 10 at the Business for the Arts Awards for its unique support of Weehawken Creative Arts, a creative arts organization serving Ouray and Montrose Counties. America’s Mattress went above and beyond its financial support of the organization to provide logistics support for its many performances. 

America’s Mattress first opened in 2004 and now has three locations in Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs and Montrose. The company first became the presenting sponsor of Weehawken Creative Arts in 2016. Its financial support offers a scholarship fund to ensure access to the arts for all who are interested, as well as support for costume fees, supplies, rent expenses and more. Quickly, however, America’s Mattress realized it could offer much more than financial dollars. 

“We’ve gone beyond offering financial support and have used the resources and skills we have within our family-owned small business to support the arts in our community,” says Ashley Unverferth, owner of America’s Mattress. “Having several large box trucks and a team of professional movers has been a huge help to Weehawken Creative Arts in many ways.” 

This includes the donation of its trucks, fuel and time to transport and set up hundreds of costumes, mirrors, ballet bars, stage pieces, backstage support equipment and more to ensure Weehawken’s performances can go off without a hitch. 

“Being a locally-owned, small business means that we have a unique opportunity to look for ways in which we can positively impact our community,” Unverferth says. “Serving the arts has been a fruitful and enjoyable aspect of owning our own business and running it in a way that’s deeply connected to our roots in this community.”
