BITSBOX

FOUNDED: 2014 | HQ: Boulder

Former Google software engineer Scott Lininger wanted to offer his daughter the opportunity to learn to code like he had as a child, but there were limited options available to attain this new skill and have some fun.

So, he built one himself.

Boulder-based Bitsbox is a subscription “present” that arrives at your door with a “leveled learning system” for kids ages 6 though 14. According to co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Aidan Chopra, “Our product is a little old school. We ship paper products to learn a digital skill. But it’s a golden ticket to a great future.”

The company, which has secured $1.5 million in funding to date, creates $20 to $45 boxes that arrive monthly, and teach kids to type code and build games.

Highlights from the last few years include BitsBox’s inclusion in Boulder’s Boomtown Seed Accelerator, a $250,000 Kickstarter campaign and promotion on the hit TV show, “Shark Tank.”

This year, Amazon approached Lininger and Chopra about including BitsBox on its subscription aggregator platform late this year.

“It’s an amazing sales channel, and they’re only putting five companies into the kids' category,” Chopra says.

HIRING? YES. BitsBox plans to hire between four and six people in 2018.
