Mizel started Mizel Development Corp. (MDC) with $50,000 in 1972 and grew it into a real estate empire. The parent of Richmond American Homes, Denver-based MDC is now one of the largest homebuilders in the country. In 2016, the company rode a red-hot housing market to a 29 percent uptick in home sales revenue to $716 million.

Mizel has balanced his professional life with philanthropy, and is chairman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which fights racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance worldwide. He founded the Mizel Museum to showcase Jewish history and foster cross-cultural understanding in 1982.
