Design Your Business Around Your Health

Customize your life around your personal vision and values

Jarrod Musick //December 10, 2018//

I live my life by eight core principles. One is to: “Take care of your body [because] you only get one.” Money can buy a lot, but it can’t buy health. Taking the time to exercise, walk or stretch each day and making intentional decisions about what to eat are foundational pieces to my vision of true wealth. But good health isn’t something that happens overnight; it has to be built and maintained. This isn’t a commentary about fitness and nutrition, so I won’t go into the details on how to achieve wellness. However, I do want to talk about the role of a business owner and how that can play into building the physical and mental health components of true wealth.

HOW COMPANIES CAN BOOST THEIR EMPLOYEE WELLBEING PROGRAMS

Being a business owner is all about customizing your life around your personal vision. One of the benefits is being able to tailor your schedule around the priorities that are most important to you outside of work. If  you don’t exercise because it doesn’t fit into your schedule, consider changing the schedule to make the time. For some, like me, 5 a.m., is the best time to get that movement into the day. It is quiet, nobody else needs anything from me and it feels like I am getting a head start on the rest of the world. Other people – namely my wife – think I am crazy for getting up that early and prefer to get their movement in at the end of the workday. Whether you are an early bird weightlifter, lunchtime runner, afternoon yogi or evening group fitness junkie, there really is no right way. The best workout is the one that you get excited about and do every day. So, think about your favorite time to get moving and build it into your daily business schedule.

Mental health is just as important as physical.

As business owners, we are subject to many stressors every day. Making time to practice something that contributes to a calm mind is another item to focus your schedule customization on. For some, it is scheduling a daily walk outside. For others, it might be practicing daily meditation. Whatever you find to be a key for your mental health, build it into your schedule. I am a big fan of adding recurring private calendar items where the rest of the team can look at my calendar and know that I am not available. It guarantees that the time is available and already spoken for so that I never miss my physical or mental health practices.

Business owners have a tremendous opportunity to build our lives around our vision of true wealth. Take the opportunity to start building your schedule around the things that are most important to you.
