Handshake Leadership’s motto is “Purpose Over Profit,” because to Erik Huffman, “why he does what he does means more than the money the company will make,” colleague Jennifer Miller says. Although it is not a nonprofit, the organizational-leadership development and cyber education firm is committed to a policy of helping any school district, teacher, Girl Scout troop or social impactful company, regardless of ability to pay.

Huffman pioneered a program to train grade-school teachers in cybersecurity so they could in turn pass the knowledge to their students, which led to school district partnerships. He also started an initiative to train Girl Scout troops in cybersecurity in an effort to help close the gender gap in the computer science and cyber workforce.

Huffman has presented his research in cyberpsychology at NASA, Peak Cyber, SnowFROC, ISACA-SF, CSTTF, TedxColoradoSprings and the Pikes Peak Regional Small Business Cybersecurity Summit. His company also sponsored the Coding in Action competition hosted by Widefield School District 3.

In 2018, Huffman was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Pikes Peak Region’s Small Business Development Center, as well as the Colorado Springs Mayor’s Young Leader in Education.
