Creating a Photographic Eye - Beginning Digital Photography

Time: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm

Location: DaVinci Institute, 511 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, CO 80027

Web Site:

Do you want to learn the nuts and bolts about what it takes to get great pictures with your digital camera? You say you don’t have time to take a semester course in photography? Learn the necessary basics in one day from professional photographer Eli Vega, based right here in Boulder County. Eli is a certified instructor and can help translate technical concepts into easy-to-understand tips, anecdotes, and analogies.
A lot of beginning-to-intermediate photographers do not realize how many options, features, and creative controls are built into lenses. Photography is much more than just understanding where that little shutter button is to “take a picture.” We can go from taking pictures to creating images by applying non-linear approaches to our photography.
You will learn the purpose and use of dials/buttons on your camera and camera menu functions which will greatly enhance your photography. Eli gets invited to serve as competition judge by several camera clubs in the area. One of the key components he sees missing by many photographers is good composition.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, the triad relationship between f/stops, shutter speeds, and the camera’s built-in meter can be your “Devil’s Triangle”—a mystery that’s scary and that can often produce terribly inconsistent results.
This last portion of the course will “connect the dots” through a 3-hour in-the-field hands-on lesson (in and around downtown Louisville). Students will participate in an on-your-own photo shoot, as you receive 1-on-1 coaching from Eli.

NOTE: Bring your camera and camera manual to class. And bring your own lunch.

TIME: 08:00am-3:00pm

COST: $69

Future of Programming - What every aspiring coder needs to know

Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Location: DaVinci Institute, 511 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, CO 80027

Web Site:

In the beginning, coders worked in absolute binary, a tedious and error-prone process.

In 1949 when the Assembler language first appeared, followed by Fortran (1955) and Cobol (1959), old time programmers of the day thought these new languages were for sissies.

In the 1960s we saw a move towards object-oriented programming where “objects” with data fields (attributes that describe the object) are tied to associated procedures known as “methods.”

Over time the number of languages began to proliferate – Pascal (1970), C (1972 and later changed to C++ in 1980), Objective-C (1986), and Perl (1987).

With the proliferation of the Internet in the 1990s, languages adapted to the online world and new languages began to appear – Haskell (1990), Python (1991), Ruby (1993), Java (1995), Javascript (1995), and PHP (1995).

Along with the introduction of smartphones and tablets came another transition that began with new operating systems like Google’s Android (2005) and Apple’s iOS (2007).

So where do we go from here? Will Google Glass and Apple’s watch lead us into the next generation of wearable technology, and how will programming change as a result of that? How will the massive expansion of both structure and unstructured data affect how coders do their work?

Join us as we explore both the future of programming technology and the overarching philosophies and theories guiding this constantly emerging field.

Haskell for Programmers Workshop

Time: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Location: DaVinci Institute, 511 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, CO 80027

Web Site:

NOTE: Haskell for Programmers is a three day workshop: September 16-18, 2013, 8:30am-4:30pm.

Haskell is quickly becoming the go-to language for high-performance and mission critical software. Yet for programmers who are experienced with traditional, imperative programming languages, Haskell’s way of doing things can seem counter intuitive and difficult to understand. But learning Haskell doesn’t have to be hard!

This 3-day workshop moves rapidly through the basics and digs deeply into seemingly complex topics such as monads and working with mutable state. The primary focus of this workshop is on real world software development with the occasional discussion of theory.

You’ll write and optimize software using popular Haskell tools and packages such as Cabal, cabal-dev, HLint, ByteString, and Attoparsec. After the workshop you’ll be ready to write efficient Haskell code for real world production use.

Why Haskell?

Simple. Haskell is leading the way in compiler technologies for generating efficient and safe applications without placing unnecessary burdens on the programmer. By leveraging the Haskell type system the safety of code can be enforced, meaning bugs must be dealt with by the programmer instead of being passed silently on to users. While Haskell can’t ensure that all bugs have been squashed, it gets a lot closer than most mainstream languages.

Want to know more? This might help.

What's Included?

  • Catered lunch each day
  • Access to all code used during the workshop
  • Digital copy of all class materials
  • 1 hour of support after workshop completion

Prior professional experience programming with an imperative laguage such as C, C++, Java, Ruby, Python, C#, etc.  A laptop or the willingness to lug around a desktop computer. A unix-like operating system (e.g. Linux, Mac OS X) is highly recommended but not necessary.

Earlybird Registration

Early pricing $1400. Early registration ends August 1, 2013. Regular price $1800.

EVENT: Haskell for Programmers Workshop
DATE: September 16-18, 2013
TIME: 08:30am-4:30pm

COST: Before August 1st - $1400, After August 1st - $1800

  • 10:00 – 10:30am                Networking

Often, we focus our online efforts on bringing NEW customers to our website but little to no focus on what they do when they actually get to our sites.  Using A/B and Multivariate testing to improve conversion rates is often times the fastest route to increasing revenue online.    With testing and optimization, you can generate huge lifts in revenue with no additional media dollars.  We will discuss how to get started, what tools to use, how to prioritize which areas of your site to focus on, and give tips on what kind of updates make the biggest impact. Finally, we will review some common pit falls, how to define the proper segment of customer to focus on for each test, and a high level introduction into statistical significance.

Key Topics and Takeaways

  •  How to increase the conversion rate of your website with no optimization to your media or media mix.
  •  How to give your online marketing ROI a mega boost in a short amount of time.
  • How to successfully run A/B and Multivariate test on your website.
  • When to use an A/B test and when to use a Multivariate test.
  • What A/B testing tool is right for you and your website
  • How to determine what pages and element of your website to test?

In film, television, and on stage, Baxter is noted for her accessible portrayals of intelligent, independent women, most notably, on the long-running and extremely popular “Family Ties”. Transitioning to drama after seven years as one of America’s favorite sitcom stars, she quickly became one of the most sought-after actors for television movies. Baxter also served as executive-producer on her television series “The Faculty” for ABC and in the same capacity for a number of her own movies for television. She most recently appeared on the hit series “Glee”.

On TV and in life, Baxter has devoted much of her time to speaking out on issues about which she is passionate, including alcoholism and recovery. Sober now for 23 years, Meredith recently released her autobiography, “Untied: A Memoir of Family, Fame, and Floundering”. She is the mother of five grown children and lives with her partner in Santa Monica, California.

Past keynote speakers for the Arapahoe House Luncheon include Dr.Drew Pinksy (2010), Christopher Kennedy Lawford (2011), and John Larroquette (2012). Tickets for the 4th Annual Arapahoe House luncheon are available online at

Diana Krall “Glad Rag Doll World Tour”

Time: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Location: Pikes Peak Center

Grammy®-winning pianist/vocalist Diana Krall, one of today's best-selling jazz artists, is coming to the Pikes Peak Center with an evening of unmistakably sophisticated jazz. She will appear on the heels of her self-proclaimed “song and dance” album Glad Rag Doll with her GLAD RAG DOLL WORLD TOUR.
Diana Krall's extraordinary new album Glad Rag Doll (10/02, Verve Records) is an exhilarating and adventurous exploration of new sounds, new instrumentation and new musicians. It stars a singer and piano player, filled with mischief, humor and a renewed sense of tenderness and intimacy.
The record reveals itself at that remarkable vanishing point in time where all music, swinging, rocking and taboo, collide with songs of longing, solace and regret. All are made new again in a vaudeville of Krall's own imagining.

Demo Day for DaVinci Coders

Time: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Location: DaVinci Institute, 511 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, CO 80027

Web Site:

Coming up in September, there's one event you won't want to miss - DEMO DAY!

Our current students in DaVinci Coders will be finishing up their studies with one final performance at Demo Day on Monday, September 30th. Presentations will involve both solo and team efforts, along with no small amount of ingenuity.

Join us for this festive evening. Light appetizers, drinks, and awesomeness are also on the docket for the event. An After Party will follow at Ralphies Sports Tavern next door.

The end of the DaVinci Coders class in no way means the end for these students. In the same way a diploma doesn’t make you an expert, the process of learning never really stops. Rather, it better frames the road and possibilities that lie before them. It’s an important lesson being able to sustain personal growth moving forward on top of what skills students have gained here in just 11-weeks. It’s no small feat becoming ingrained in a new community and finding a whole new beginning in the software development and design world in this short period of time.

DaVinci Coders is a Ruby on Rails beginner-based, full-immersion, 11-week program designed to help motivated, passionate individuals reboot their lives. Computer programmers are in huge demand and this school is designed to help people like you get started.

Our next classes will start on October 7, 2013. At DaVinci Coders, we're looking for a few remarkable people who want to be a part of this life changing opportunity. Many will apply, but only a few will be chosen. Are you one of them?

EVENT: Demo Day for DaVinci Coders
DATE: September 30, 2013 - Monday
TIME: 6:00pm-9:00pm

COST: Free
