The Peacemaker

Megan Mahncke

35 | Vice President and Regional Director of Marketing and Communications and President of the Saint Joseph Foundation
SCL Health/St. Joseph Hospital

Megan Mahncke has the rare ability to get groups on opposing sides of an issue to work together, allowing her to create innovative solutions that move strategic plans forward. When she was recruited to join the leadership team at St. Joseph Hospital in 2013, the hospital was just over a year from moving into its new building and in the midst of negotiations with National Jewish Health to sign a joint-operating agreement. She played a key role in communications between the organizations, resulting in an agreement last June.

Biggest achievement

“Being able to go into different industries within the Colorado and Denver community. It’s the same systematic approach, and the same principles apply. I couldn’t be doing what I’m doing now had I not had the two previous jobs. I would have been eaten alive.”

Making an impact

“In most places, my role has been to clearly define what the objectives are. It’s been different in each place, but usually it comes down to building relationships and bringing groups together. I use conflict resolution every single day – I have a master’s in it, and I think everyone should have to take classes in it.”

Role models

“The biggest mentors are the ones who took a risk on hiring me. Being a young professional, your age is not the best thing you bring to the table. They would look beyond that. I didn’t have just one mentor or role model.”

Best advice

“When things get going really fast, take a step back and pay attention to what you’re doing and make sure things are lining up.”

Off-duty

“I love to be with friends and family and cook and hang out. And we travel. I have two young boys and they are wild. I start off the day with sword fights and I end the day with sword fights.”
