The Teambuilder

Steve Shear

29 | Senior Vice President, Director of Treasury Management
First Western Trust

Steve Shear transformed First Western’s treasury management department into a critical part of the company’s operation by building a full suite of treasury management services and redesigning its internal process – an achievement that resulted in a 40 percent increase in the department’s  revenue in 2013. He also helped shape the culture at First Western when the company was experiencing a slump in morale. As a former athlete, he knows the impact nutrition has on health and attitude, so he introduced the healthy snacks program. A board member of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, Shear also contributes to the Colorado High School Sports Association by helping engage children in healthy activities that teach teamwork, integrity and citizenship.

Biggest achievement

“We are not considered a commercial bank, so introducing a commercial banking presence to a team of wealth management folks. It’s taken a while, but we’ve really gotten employees and associates to buy into what we’re doing. I have longstanding clients who we’ve just done wealth management for that we’re now doing commercial banking for.”

Making an impact

“I focus on youth and developing the next generation. I’m involved in youth sports and believe in the character you gain playing sports. It helps as you leave the playing field and enter the working field.”

Role model

Dino Camunez, regional president of First Western Trust.

“I identified with him very early on. He’s been very important as I’ve developed my professional career.”

Best advice

“As a leader it’s really important to take less credit than you deserve and take more blame than you should.”

Off-duty

“I’m an avid golfer. I have a wonderful fiancée and two amazing dogs. If I’m not at work, I’m on the golf course or we’re taking the dogs on a hike.”
