Justin Cohen believes everyone should have access to legal help, even if they can’t afford to pay. Since joining Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck in 2012, Cohen has represented dozens of pro bono clients, donating countless hours of work.

His commitment to giving back has reverberated throughout the firm. A pro bono case on behalf of a domestic abuse victim led to a relationship between Brownstein and Project Safeguard, an organization dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence. As lead contact, Cohen coordinates with other attorneys in the firm to staff cases for Project Safeguard’s clients. The firm has taken more than 40 pro bono cases through Project Safeguard since the fall of 2012.

“I am continuously humbled by the fact that, regardless of whether I’m representing a public company or a pro bono client, I am always listening to and helping others,” Cohen says.

Since joining Brownstein, Cohen has averaged more than one consequential trial per year first-chaired a five-day jury trial in federal court as an associate and was nominated as Brownstein’s pro bono attorney of the year within his first two years. He’s also the youngest-ever president of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association and serves on the boards of Colorado Common Cause and Big Green, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a national school food culture and promoting youth wellness.

Recipe for success: “Never stop learning (and) being adaptable and flexible.”
