Gina Klawitter: Maternity Sculptures

Gina Klawitter’s art has evolved over the course of her 40-year career in the Denver area.

“At CSU, I trained as a graphic designer so I had a way of making money,” she says. “But I realized I had to make art with my hands.”

After starting as a painter, Klawitter moved into mixed-media portraits, which led her to perfect a proprietary process to mold a fabric sculpture of a model.

“It blends three passions of mine: sculpting, painting and collaborating with others.”

“It’s magic,” she says. “It blends three passions of mine: sculpting, painting and collaborating with others.”

Since 2017, she’s used the method to create work for the Colorado Ballet and the U.S. Olympic Training Center before finding a customer who wanted to commemorate her pregnancy with a fabric sculpture of her belly.

“I love doing commissioned work and showing people in all different shapes and sizes,” Klawitter says.
