From Community Markets to Family Business

Leanna Organics is a skincare and wellness company based in Westminster, Colorado, founded in 2018 by myself, Tracy, and Scott (husband-and-wife team). We’ve always had a passion for natural and holistic wellness.

I started by making skincare products, mainly for family and friends. When Scott injured his back in 2017, we began to look for a holistic way to treat his back pain, and we found CBD. I decided to infuse CBD into our skincare products and launched a CBD business.

We’ve faced many obstacles; merchant accounts problems, challenges marketing on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Amazon, and difficulties finding a bank that supports CBD. On top of this, we were new business owners and didn’t understand the importance of SEO or how to do it.

In 2021, we joined our local chamber of commerce and began to network with other small businesses.

Despite the difficulties, we pushed through. We are a family business and pulled together to get through adversity in the beginning. Our two oldest children pitched in to help us with design and social media. We also did a different pop-up market almost every weekend with the help of our kids.

In November of 2019, we saw an opportunity when a local retail space opened near our home at the Orchard Town Center in Westminster. Unfortunately, two months later, COVID hit. We closed our doors for eight weeks, and this was when Scott took over SEO.

As we began the enormous task of trying to understand SEO, we focused on our social media platforms, partnering with others in the wellness industry, and started to release blogs on wellness, skincare, and holistic health.

When we reopened, foot traffic at our shop was slow. However, our online sales sustained us due to our success on Twitter.

In 2021, we joined our local chamber of commerce and began to network with other small businesses. We also joined the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Additionally, we focused on giving back. We partnered with The Nature Conservancy and donated monthly to their cause. We joined the Westminster SAGE, a program that recognizes local business sustainability practices. In 2022, we are joining the Colorado Green Business Network, a statewide program that helps Colorado businesses with efficiency and environmental sustainability.

We have run into many hurdles and difficulties in the last three years, yet, we still run our business with love.

We continue to do markets locally to bring awareness to our brand and have found that the public enjoys meeting the faces behind the brand. Come April of 2022, we have been enjoying a steady flow of people into our store and a number-one ranking for many local SEO keywords.

With so much to learn, running a small business has challenges. When things get complicated or stressful, we have learned to adapt to the environment — learning to redirect our mindset and focus on solutions rather than problems. We have run into many hurdles and difficulties in the last three years, yet, we still run our business with love.
