The impact of the health care sector on our economy

It's growing by leaps and bounds

The health care sector has a huge impact on the health of our economy, says Richard Ziegner, Executive Vice President & Director of Healthcare Banking at UMB Bank.

In 2013, health care was 17.4 percent of the nation's GDP, representing $2.9 trillion flowing into the health care sector, Ziegner says.

"The numbers are really staggering," he says. "There are 4,950 hospitals in our country, about 15,000 long-term care facilities and 10,000 out-patient centers of one type or another. So just when you look at the numbers, the health care business or the health care segment is truly a large piece of what our country does."
