Who owns Colorado: Colorado Sustainable Design Awards celebrate the state’s best architecture

ColoradoBiz Staff //July 1, 2009//

ColoradoBiz wants to celebrate building design by recognizing projects statewide that exemplify social, environmental and economic sustainability.

The magazine is now accepting applications for the Colorado Sustainable Design Awards, a program launched in partnership with the American Institute for Architects (AIA Colorado), the Urban Land Institute (ULI Colorado) and United States Green Building Council, Colorado Chapter (USGBCC).

The awards were developed to highlight sustainable architecture and land use in private and public settings. The competition is open to Colorado-based design firms and feature projects completed or under way in the state. Awards will be judged in four categories:

1. Residential architecture — single family homes

2. Commercial architecture — office/mixed-use/multi-family buildings

3. Civic architecture

4. Sustainable Communities Award — land development, urban design and or master-planned communities Photography and descriptions of finalists and winners in each category will be featured in the November issue of ColoradoBiz, within the Planet Profit Report section of the magazine focusing on sustainable business and the new energy economy. Winners will also be recognized at the 2009 Rocky Mountain Commercial Real Estate Expo and Fall Forecast, Nov. 10 at the Colorado Convention Center.

ColoradoBiz Publisher Bart Taylor cited the work of Colorado-based firms as a key reason for the launch of the awards program.

“CSDA (Colorado Sustainable Design Awards) provides a unique and timely platform to recognize the role of Colorado architects, planners and builders in positioning our state as a leader in sustainable design and development,” he said. “Highlighting the great work being done in Colorado is the right thing to do.”

ULI Colorado Executive Director Michael Leccese also welcomed the timing of the awards.

“The ‘triple bottom line’ of economic, social and environmental sustainability is a ULI ‘best practice’ we look forward to recognizing and encouraging in Colorado,” he said. “I’m sure our many members pursuing sustainable design, planning and development will be eager to compete.”

Details regarding nomination criteria and all other information are posted at cobizmag.com. Deadline for nominations is Aug. 1. There is no fee required to enter.
