“The Decline and Fall of the American Entrepreneur: How Little Known Laws and Regulations are Killin

Location: MadCap Theater, 10679 Westminster Blvd, Westminster, CO 80020

As a patent attorney, Dale Halling deals with start-up entrepreneurs on a daily basis. He began noticing a significant difference between the types of projects his clients were involved with in the 1990s and 2000s. Clients, in the 90s, would come into his office with plans to build businesses that were disruptive or revolutionary. The technologies underlying these companies held the potential to completely redefine a market. Some of the ideas would increase the available bandwidth by 10x for minimal costs or allow data searches that were 10-100x faster than existing technologies. It was very exciting talking with these entrepreneurs. Their energy was infectious and the potential implications of their work was mesmerizing. However, the tech downturn of 2000-2001 changed all that. After 2002, the start-up companies he came into contact with were all looking for narrow niche markets. Instead of trying to make dramatic changes to technology and go public, these companies were looking to develop incremental changes and be bought out by an existing company. He started wondering if other people in the tech world were seeing similar trends. Recent innovations like the iPod, the tremendous amount of money Intel was spending to build their next microprocessor plant, and the social media industry are certainly innovative, but they are not capable of altering the entire economy like the Internet of the 90s. The Internet in the 90s affected almost every business in the U.S. It drove PC sales, retail, electronics, telecommunications, professional businesses, marketing, newspapers, and much more. It also redefined whole areas of life, with email, online shopping, and online advertising. It was impossible to escape the effects of the Internet unless you crawled under a rock. The personal computer revolution of the 80s had a similar effect. The iPod has been cool, but hasn't affected the whole economy. So what's behind all this? The changes have seemed subtle from the outside, but the ripple effects have been huge. Join us as we take a hard look at how the face of innovation has changed, and what we can do to turn it around. EVENT: Night with a Futurist DATE: April 5, 2010 - Monday TIME: 6:30pm-9:00pm WEBSITE: http://www.davinciinstitute.com/events/433/night-with-a-futurist-monday-april--5-2010 LOCATION: MADCAP Theater, 10679 Westminster Blvd, Westminster, CO 80020 COST: $25 PHONE: 303-666-4133 TOPIC: "The Decline and Fall of the American Entrepreneur: How Little Known Laws and Regulations are Killing Innovation" SPEAKER: Dale Halling, Patent Attorney, Entrepreneur and Author

8th Annual Here’s Life Inner City Golf Fundraiser - Sponsored by comCables
Date: June 17, 2010
Time: 6:30AM - 1:30PM
Location: Fox Hollow Golf Course
Web Site: http://www.comcables.com
In 2009, Despite the tough economy, nearly $30,000 was raised for two Denver inner-city youth programs last week by a charity golf tournament held at Fox Hollow at Lakewood Golf Course. Proceeds benefit Here’s Life Inner City Denver (HLICD) and the Sun Valley Youth Center. Lead sponsor of the event was comCables, a Denver-based maker of cabling products and distributor of low-voltage systems. According to Inc. magazine, comCables is one of America’s fastest-growing inner-city companies. More than a dozen other sponsors supported the outing. During the tournament, Denver youngsters helped by the programs gave treats to the more than 100 golfers and sometimes helped them putt. Later, several youths spoke to the participants about how the programs have changed their lives for the better. The seventh annual Here’s Life Inner City Golf Tournament drew more golfers than ever before. “Because of the economy, we were advised to forego the event this year,” said Greg Greenwood, CEO of comCables. “But the tournament is too important to our commitment to giving back to the community, and it’s rewarding to all of us at comCables.” HLICD, part of a national chain of inner-city programs, is a Colorado non-profit organization that assists urban churches to reach the poorest neighborhoods in Denver. Sun Valley Youth Center is an after-school program in west Denver that provides services including tutoring, mentoring, arts and crafts, computer classes and sports and recreation. Dave Jones, an HLICD team leader, thanked sponsors of the event and said the money will be used to help challenged youngsters grow into strong, independent adults. He was joined by Salt Wall, a founder of Here’s Life Inner City, and Chris Rollerson, Executive Director at Sun Valley Youth Center. Wall said, “There is hope for Denver’s inner-city kids who face tough situations.” Golfers at the tournament, he said, “make a difference one life, one family at a time.” The 8th Annual Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, June 17, 2010.

Roselyn Saunders, a well-connected Denver community volunteer, is teaming up with Goodwill Industries of Denver to raise awareness about and funds to support Goodwill’s programming that helps more than 26,000 at-risk youth each year. Nearly 1,000 guests, celebrity competitors and celebrity judges will come together for Dancing for the Youth at Goodwill, modeled after ABC’s popular prime-time program, “Dancing with the Stars.” An idea developed by Saunders, Dancing for Goodwill Youth will be a fun evening filled with food, lively music and a dance competition all in support of Goodwill’s mission to support at-risk youth in Colorado. The evening will kick off with cocktails and a silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a live auction. Then the contest begins – featuring local celebrities paired with professional dancers from Robert Nardozza’s Colorado Dancesport Studio. While the celebrity judges deliberate, those who purchased their evening attire from Goodwill will be eligible to enter the Best Goodwill Dressed contest for great prizes. Tickets are $150 for individuals and $300 for a couple, and all proceeds will benefit Goodwill Industries of Denver and its youth services programs. Through fundraising programs like Dancing for the Youth at Goodwill, Goodwill Industries of Denver is able to offer programs that help reverse the cycle of poverty in Metro Denver and northern Colorado. Through career development curriculum and education, Goodwill helps at-risk youth and struggling adults plan a successful future and rewarding career.
