Mesa County earns "Jump-Start" status

The program promises new businesses a tax holiday

In his annual State of the State address, Gov. John Hickenlooper proclaimed Mesa County Colorado’s first “Rural Jump-Start Zone.” The initiative, led by the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), will establish tax-free zones in rural areas across the state to encourage new business and job growth.

“We're launching our Rural Jump-Start program this month in Mesa County,” Gov. Hickenlooper said. “Three companies — Colorado Clean, TSW Analytics and ProStar Geocorp — have already [started the application process]; we look forward to working with them, and with Colorado Mesa University President, Tim Foster, who is with us today to enhance the competitiveness of Colorado's rural communities.”

Jump-Start is a joint effort between counties, municipalities, higher education institutions and business communities in the state of Colorado to grow jobs in industries such as advanced manufacturing, aviation, food processing, biotech and other technologies.

"We are pleased that OEDIT granted Mesa County the distinct honor of being the first Jump-Start Zone in the State of Colorado,” said Kristi Pollard, executive director of the Grand Junction Economic Partnership, which will help new and expanding businesses navigate the new tax credit.

OEDIT will officially begin accepting applications from individual businesses starting Jan. 19.
